75 days and counting….

Posted by Andy Wicks on August 3, 2010

As we returned from our Norway trip last year talk turned to the destination of our paddling adventure in 2010. It didn’t take long before a decision was made, Nepal. Martyn, due to other commitments, would not be able to join us this year so it would just be Jethro and myself.

Many, many discussions were had between the two of us about time of year, which rivers to paddle etc., and these were resolved relatively quickly. The one question which took us the longest to decide upon an answer to was which airline is most likely to allow us to take our own kayaks with us, without it costing us a small fortune. Discussions were had with a selection of airlines before we finally settled on Kingsfisher Airlines. According to Kingfisher on Twitter:

There will be no excess baggage waiver for the items Kayak and Paddle will be included in yr FBA.

On Monday 2nd August we finally got our flights booked and the countdown can now officially begin – 75 days and counting :-)

The orange torpedo

Posted by Andy Wicks on April 8, 2010

The weekend of Thursday 25th to Monday 29th March saw Tim and I make our now annual visit to a friend in Geneva for a spot of skiing. This year Steve was our host, and a very good host he was. Arriving on Thursday evening, Tim and I realised our frequent mistake of arriving in Geneva with no map or directions to our destination. Having done this twice before you would have thought that we would have learnt by now…. maybe next year…? Once we had finally found our way to Steve’s apartment we were treated to a rooftop barbecue before heading to a local bar for a beer or two.

Steve had to work on Friday, so Tim and I took the ski-bus to La Clusaz for the day. Last year we hired cars in order to get to the ski resorts so were a bit unsure about taking the ski-bus. Having done it for this weekend, I would not hesitate in taking one again, as it means you have time to sleep on the way to, and more importantly the way back from, the ski resorts. Friday morning treated us to heavy snow showers, leading to poor visibility on the slopes.

During the afternoon the skies started to clear and we enjoyed skiing in the sunshine – our only sunshine of the weekend!

On Saturday we took the ski-bus to La Clusaz again, although this time we were accompanied by Steve and Anneleen this time. Again we had snow showers on the slopes, although today they didn’t stop. I did, however, have my first lunch on a ski-slope. One thing I am not too sure about is the drinking at lunchtime before spending all afternoon skiing – or maybe it was just the amount we consumed that was the problem? Within 30 metres of leaving the restaurant after lunch, Steve stopped and turned back up-slope only to see a rather large bright orange object (aka me) flying through the air towards him – rather like a flying torpedo. Fortunately for Steve I landed only a foot away from taking him out. The first I knew that I was flying towards Steve was when I heard him shout in surprise as he spotted me!

On Saturday evening we headed out for ‘Gambas a-go-go’, which is basically all you can eat king prawns! Very nice but expensive at the same time.

On Sunday we decided to head to Flaine. Before heading to bed on Saturday night we remembered about the clocks going forward overnight and so set our alarms accordingly. Isabell, however, did not. We ended up having to distract the ski-bus driver for nine minutes as Isabell rushed across Geneva in order to join us for the day! Fortunately the driver insisted on giving everyone a speech on not eating on his bus as he did not want to have to clean it and Isabell made it just in time. Again we had more snow fall during the day but this ensured that we had good snow conditions – we were just unable to to see the undulations in the terrain again.

Due to having issues with my boots on Friday, and again today, I ended up sitting out for a couple of runs. Rather than just sit and wait, I sit with a beer and took a few photos!

On Sunday evening we met up with Nick, who we stayed with on our trip last year, and headed to a Fondue restaurant by the lake.

On Monday Tim and I enjoyed a cultural day around Geneva, visiting the Jet d’eau (a 140 metre tall jet of water pumping 500 litres of water per second!) and a selection of chocolate shops before heading to the airport to catch our flight back to the UK. I learnt that if you stand only a few metres from the base of the fountain then you get very wet!

Simon’s Norway write-up…

Posted by Andy Wicks on January 21, 2010

Following on from our trip to Norway during the summer of 2009, Simon has written an article on his blog, during which he talks about how you don’t have to be a crazy-hardcore whitewater paddler for a trip there to be worthwhile…

Norway: Trolls, fjords, a-Ha and big scary grade 5 rivers. Having never been there, my entire knowledge of paddling in Norway was based on the tales of beat downs, multiple swims and other such carnage that friends had spoken about in hushed tones after a pint or two. Despite this, in my mind it still seemed to be a place every self respecting white water paddler should visit at least once.

Norway 2009

Posted by Andy Wicks on August 17, 2009

On 28th July 2009 12 paddlers made the journey from England to the whitewater mecca of Norway. 12 days and 3829 miles later we returned having managed 14 sections of river in 9 days. During the trip we paddled everything from very high volume on the Sjoa Playrun through to steep and technical on the Upper Jori, park-and-hucked on Ula Foss and walked into the Upper Asbjornia!

This is the video of our trip.

Norway….here we come!

Posted by Andy Wicks on July 28, 2009

After almost ten months of planning and preparing we are finally en-route to Norway. We currently sat at Dover awaiting our ferry. We have managed 109 miles of our approx 1200 mile journey to our campsite in Norway.

Somehow we have managed to load all our clothes, camping kit, and paddling kit and still have loads of space in the car…. something that we might find useful during our long drive up.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow…

Posted by Andy Wicks on February 4, 2009

A plan was hatched late last year when Nick suggested that we head across to Geneva to visit him and go skiing for a weekend at one of his local resorts.

Tim and myself travelled out together, meeting one of Nick’s friends from uni, Martin, and one of Martin’s friends, J, at Luton airport on Friday morning as we were all on the same flight. Landing in Geneva, we collected the hire car and headed to the resort of Le Grand Bornand.

Martin and J went off to do some harder runs while Tim and I stayed on the easier runs. Before this weekend, Tim had only had a couple of hours experience on skis – a lesson at the Tamworth Snowdome – so we started off on the nursery slope. We rapidly got bored of this and decided to take on a green run. Towards the bottom, this run became narrower and twistier. At the bottom we realised that this we because we had taken a wrong turn and accidentally gone down a blue run! Friday night we met up with Nick and Rich – one of Nick’s friends from back home – for dinner followed by some pool and beer. A-M joined us later on after flying up from Nice. She would have been with us slightly earlier but she managed to get on the tram heading in the wrong direction!

Saturday we met up with Ilya and Jonathan – a couple of Nick’s friends from work – and headed back up to Le Grand Bornand for another day of fun. The start was delayed somewhat due to having to organise hiring skis and getting lift passes, but we eventually made it up to the pistes for around midday. The afternoon was spent learning a bit more before Martin, Ilya and Nick headed off to do some more challenging runs leaving Tim, A-M, J (who was now on skis), Rich and myself to enjoy some more blue runs. The day ended with Rich, J and I deciding that we fancied a go at our first red run in order to ski back to the resort. This turned out to be a challenge with each of us enjoying a couple of falls. Saturday night we headed out for dinner of all-you-can-eat prawns.

Waking up on Sunday morning we were greeted with the sight of a few inches of fresh snow on the streets of Geneva. Heading up to the resort it became clear that today was not going to be as bright and sunny as the previous two days. The cloud made seeing contours in the snow much harder than when it is sunny. The aim was to start the day with a long blue run right at the other side of the resort. To get to that run, however, required us to take cable-car, followed by a chair-lift, followed by a red run, followed by another chair-lift, followed by a blue run, followed by another chair-lift to the top of the run! We did this long blue run a couple of times before heading back to the main part of the resort for lunch. The first part of the afternoon was spent on a nice blue run we did a few times on Saturday before we headed across to another blue run we discovered at the end of Saturday. A couple of runs down this and it was soon time to head back down the mountain to the car. Ilya, Rich, J and myself took to the red run back down, whilst Tim and A-M took the cable down. The fresh snow had built up some moguls (mounds of snow on the slope) which proved to be a downfall for me as I hit one and ended up descending part of the slope head-first on my front! The rest of the run was relatively uneventful, but was a fantastic way to end the weekend of skiing. We said goodbye to A-M and Rich as they had to fly home for work on Monday and the rest of us went back to Nick’s for some dinner before going to the bar for some more pool and beer.

The plan for Monday was for Tim and myself to head into Geneva for some sight-seeing in the morning before catching our flight back to Luton in the afternoon. Nick was going back to work and Martin and J were heading back into the mountains for another day of skiing. Our plans were scuppered due to Mother Nature’s intervention – when she covered Southern England in snow. This caused our flight to be cancelled, followed by queueing for just over two hours in order to rebook onto another flight – Tuesday morning to Gatwick – before we headed back into Geneva for another night with Nick, Martin and J.

Our trip to the airport was much more successful on Tuesday, with our flight only delayed by ten minutes. Getting to Gatwick, however, was not the end of our journey. From there, we had to get up to Luton in order to collect my car from the car park there. Eventually, I made it back to Ealing only 23 hours late.
